Living in Extremes w. Amputee Powerlifter KC Mitchell

Going to the gym for the first time … sucks. You can’t just think about going to the gym. You just have to get up and do it.

In 2010, while on his 2nd deployment in Afghanistan, staff sergeant KC Mitchell was on a night patrol. That night, the vehicle he was commanding was struck by an improvised explosive device (IED).

KC would suffer multiple injuries:

  • 2nd and 3rd degree burns
  • Fractured lower back
  • Compartment syndrome (right forearm)
  • Right ankle fracture
  • Right knee dislocation
  • Hearing loss (right ear)
  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Severe left leg trauma

Over the course of the next three years, KC underwent over 30 surgeries on his road to recovery.

In January 2017, KC Mitchell decided to step onto the USPA platform and attempt to become the 1st amputee in the world to compete in the men’s 242lb raw division.

KC would go on to:

  • Squat 435 lbs
  • Bench Press 424 lbs
  • Deadlift 600 lbs
